Forms of Acne
- Blackheads: These type of acne develop when too much sebum, or oil, mixes with dead skin cells and blocks the opening of a pore. The sebum then oxidizes once it contacts air, giving it the typical black color.
- Whiteheads: Unlike blackheads, these acne form a small white bump when sebum and dead skin cells become trapped beneath the skin’s surface. Since the sebum is not exposed to the underlying air, it does not oxidize and remains white.
- Papules: These tiny, red bumps are merely the beginning of inflammation in a pore filled with bacteria, dead cells, and other matter. The bacteria feed off of that trapped sebum and cause an immune response in your skin so that it becomes red and inflamed.
- Pustules: Essentially, the pustules are just papules with the additional characteristic of pus. The white, pus-filled center is actually comprised of white blood cells simply battling the bacterial infection in the clogged pore.
- Nodules: These are larger, solid bumps that form deep within the layers of skin. Nodules are painful because of inflammation that reaches a deeper tissue and also might take longer to get well compared to papules or pustules.
Causes of Acne
Acne can be caused by a wide range of reasons:
- Hormonal Fluctuations– Puberty and menstruation can create an imbalance in hormones levels, which may cause overproduction of oil and clog skin pores.
- Genetics– Genetics is also responsible for acne sometimes. So, if your parents had acne, you are at a higher chance of getting it as well.
- Dietary Choices– Sugary and processed foods may worsen acne breakouts for some individuals.
- Stress– Stress and anxiety are well-known triggers for acne flare-ups.
- Medications– Some medications are known to have acne as a possible side effect.
