Benefits of lip fillers
Lip fillers offer several advantages, including:
They are safe, with a low risk of complications or side effects.
They can enhance your self-esteem.
They are reversible; if you're not satisfied with the results, your healthcare provider can use an enzyme (hyaluronidase) to dissolve the filler.
Before your lip filler procedure
Before your lip filler procedure, you’ll have a consultation. We will review various factors, including your mental health and social circumstances. We may ask:
- Why do you want lip fillers?
- What are your expectations?
- Do you frequently worry about minor or imagined body flaws?
- Is someone encouraging you to get lip fillers?
Your physical health and facial shape are also important. We will assess your overall health, including any existing conditions or risk factors. Be sure to mention any allergies you have and any medications or supplements you’re taking.
We will examine and measure your face and take photos of your face and lips for your medical record.
During the lip filler procedure
During the lip filler procedure, we will use a topical anesthetic to numb your lips, making the process more comfortable. This numbing cream typically contains benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT). After 15 to 30 minutes, your lips should be numb.
If you’re allergic to BLT, we may use a nerve block injection instead. Your lips should be numb about 15 to 30 minutes after the injection.
Next, we will use a thin needle to inject the filler into various parts of your lips, such as the edges, the curve in the center, and the corners. You might feel a slight pinching sensation and your eyes may water, but you shouldn’t experience pain.
An ice pack may be applied to reduce swelling and bruising during the procedure.
The entire process usually takes between 30 minutes and two hours.
After the procedure
After the procedure, we may gently massage your lips to help the filler settle and continue to apply ice to reduce swelling.
We will monitor you for up to 15 minutes to check for any side effects such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive bleeding. Once it’s clear that you don’t need further observation, we’ll discharge you. A local anesthetic won’t make you feel tired, so you can drive yourself home, though having a friend or family member drive you might be a good idea.
Expect your lips to be swollen, sensitive, and bruised. Swelling usually fades within 24 to 48 hours but can take up to a week to fully subside.
We will schedule a follow-up appointment in about two weeks to check your progress and may take another photo for comparison with your pre-procedure images.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do lip fillers last?
Lip fillers usually last between 12 to 18 months. However, the duration can vary based on your age and metabolism. Younger individuals often have a faster metabolism, which may cause the fillers to wear off more quickly.

Lip fillers come with some potential risks, including:
- Infection
- Reactivation of cold sores
- Discoloration or tenderness
- Uneven lip size (asymmetry)
- Bleeding and pain at the injection sites
- Tissue damage (vascular compromise) if the filler is injected near an artery
- Migration of the filler to other areas of
- your face, typically towards the nose
Are lip fillers harmful?
Lip fillers are a medical procedure and are generally safe when done by a skilled healthcare provider, such as a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or cosmetic surgeon. They should not be received from a beauty salon or spa.
Can lip fillers damage your lips?
If not administered by an experienced provider, lip fillers could potentially damage your lips. Risks include permanent stretching, tissue damage, hardening of the filler, or infection at the injection sites.
Do lip fillers cause pain?
You might feel some mild pain at the injection sites, but this should resolve within 12 to 24 hours.
Are lip fillers permanent?
Lip fillers are not permanent. They gradually fade over 12 to 18 months, depending on your metabolism. Routine touch-ups may be needed to maintain the desired volume.
Can you get lip fillers while pregnant?
There are no studies confirming the safety of lip fillers during pregnancy, and the FDA has not approved their use for pregnant women.
What is the recovery time?
Pain should subside within 12 to 24 hours, and swelling usually goes down within 24 to 48 hours, though it might take up to a week.
If you need lip fillers for an upcoming event, like a wedding, schedule the procedure at least two weeks in advance to ensure full recovery.
When can I eat or drink after getting lip fillers?
It’s best to wait until the numbing effect wears off before eating to avoid accidentally biting your lips or disturbing the filler. For at least 24 hours, avoid messy foods that might make you wipe your face or lips.
Refrain from using straws or smoking for at least 24 hours, as these actions can affect the filler. Additionally, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, as it can thin your blood and increase bruising.
